Many quotes from Fight Club imply that life is short – very, very short. The message of this quote is simple – stop wasting time on bullshit and start living your life. Truly living. Every man dies, not every man truly lives – this is a quote from the movie Braveheart.
Let me break up this quote for you… “This is your life” when Tyler says this, he emphasizes “This”, as if life is a piece of crap. He says this with a bit of sarcasm in his voice. But at the same time, it is YOUR LIFE. Something lots of us forget… Most people work for someone else or live someone else’s dream… You do what because you are told to do, sit in your little cubicle, go to work, go home, go to work, go home, eat, sleep, watch TV and waste time on shit like Facebook. More slavery for you.
And during all this time, not only are we not aware that it’s our life – but we don’t ever realize that soon enough – it will be over. What’s the point then? If you’ll be working for someone else your entire life, if you’ll do everything how society thinks you should do, if you can’t fucking think for yourself and if you don’t have the balls to say whatever the fuck you want to say – why do you live? So other people can walk all over you?
We need to wake up. We need to start living our life, not tomorrow… today. We need to break free and enjoy every moment of our life and freedom.
The problem is that most people don’t think of death… You are not aware that today you could die. Yes, you could. I could, we could all die today. But nobody thinks of that. OK. Maybe you’re thinking – why would I be thinking of death? Here’s why. If you knew that you COULD die today, how would you change your behavior? If you knew that there is no tomorrow, would you talk the same way to your mother and father, or anyone else that’s important to you? Would you argue with them over bullshit or would you tell them you love them? What would you say to someone that’s acting like an asshole to you? Would you be quiet and act nice just so you don’t lose your job – or would you beat him up?
There is an old Bushido Samurai Code – it is a samurai’s duty to think of death, every single day. Not fear death – but accept it. Understand that it will happen, that it is inevitable. That it is natural, and that it may happen anytime. The point of this fight club quote is that you absolutely have to USE every moment you have to truly live, to truly enjoy your life and give the best you can to accomplish anything you want – Seize the day… Carpe Diem.
